K Kids

With the start of the new school year, comes a multitude of exciting service and fundraising opportunities for K-Kids across the New York District.

On Oct. 1, Governor Joe Aiello and First Lady Cookie have developed two outstanding projects for the entire K-Family. Gov. Joe's Governor's Project encourages clubs to assist those with autism. This might be through fundraising such as walking in your local Autism Speaks Walk or through service by volunteering time interacting with autistic children at your school. For help planning a project please contact Governor's Project Chair Kevin Kamper at kkamper@aol.com

First Lady Cookie's First Lady’s Project asks us to collect candy for US troops overseas. While chocolate cannot be shipped, other candies such as hard candies, Starbursts, licorice, Life Savers, mints and chewing gum are welcome treats for our soldiers. Early November is an especially good time to run a candy drive for the troops. Many stores have after Halloween sales that will increase the amount of candy people will donate to your collection drives. For more information about the First Lady's Project, contact Project Chair Lt. Gov. Ann Torcivia at friendstravelny@verizon.net.

Of course, the Fall also provides an opportunity for K-Kids to support the Eliminate Project by trick-or-treating for UNICEF. The traditional orange trick-or-treat boxes are available through the Kiwanis Store online at www.kiwanisone.org. Additional information can be found on the web at theeliminateproject.org.

The Long Island South Central Division's SLP Team is planning a one-day mini-convention for K-Kids and Builders Clubs in the downstate area. The mini-convention will be held at WT Clarke Middle School in Westbury on a Saturday in November or December. If any K-Kids or Builders Club advisors, officers or members are interested in attending, please contact K-Kids Assistant Administrator Lt. Gov.-Elect Rich Santer at rs2wdld@aol.com.

As always, should any club be interested in chartering a new K-Kids or any current club is in need of assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me at (516) 333-3563 or Santer at rs2wdld@aol.com.
