The meeting which replaced this year's district convention took place Aug. 15 in Albany and online.
Voting delegates for the meeting were the current and incoming lieutenant governors, district officers and past governors. The session, which took less than an hour, replaced the annual district convention.
Two unopposed candidates were elected and one resolution was approved during the session. No other proposals were considered.
The resolution gave the district's support to the candidacy of Distinguished Past Governor Peter Mancuso for election to the office of President of Kiwanis International, at next June's International Convention. Mancuso, a member of the East Meadow club, will serve as president elect during the 2020-21 Kiwanis Year. He will be unopposed for election to the top spot at the convention in Salt Lake City.
Elected governor for 2020-21 was Brenda Leigh Johnson, a member of the Northport-East Northport club; elected governor-elect for the coming year was James Mancuso of the East Meadow club.
The meeting included the installation ceremony which usually occurs on Sunday morning at the convention. Peter Mancuso thanked the 2019-20 District Board for its service, and installed the board for the coming year.
He made special note when installing his brother, James Mancuso as governor-elect. Peter's brother had been Peter's campaign manager during his run for International office.
As a result of the elections, James Mancuso will serve as district governor the same year Peter serves as International president.
The incoming board, in addition to the lieutenant governors, will include Johnson, James Mancuso, District Secretary Rich Hall of the Glen Cove club, and District Treasurer Michael Wayne of the Elmira club.
Following the business session, 2019-20 Gov. Joseph Ruggiero, Gov.-Designate Brenda Leigh Johnson and Gov.-Elect Designate James Mancuso addressed those in attendance in Albany. Their speeches can be viewed:
Without a district convention, the annual meeting of the District Foundation also could not take place. The foundation's bylaws dictate that in such a situation the current office holders remain in office until the foundation's next annual meeting. The terms of President Sal Anelli, Joseph Battista and Kim Scharoff are extended as a result.
