Welcome to The New York District of Kiwanis.
Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world one child and one community at a time. You can learn more about us here: Kiwanis International Fact Sheet.
The New York District is organized into "clubs" in various towns throughout the state. We also have other types of clubs, such as those that meet over the Internet. Club members meet regularly, organizing themselves to perform community service projects both locally and through worldwide service projects, such as ELIMINATE. This Kiwanis initiative provides vaccines to defend against Maternal Neonatal Tetanus (MNT), a disease that kills thousands of babies and mothers every year in third world countries.
Club projects support children of all ages as well as adults. For example, we run Kamp Kiwanis through our New York District Foundation, in Taberg, New York, for underprivileged children and adults with disabilities. Hundreds come every summer to enjoy a week-long vacation in a fun-filled safe environment at no cost. It provides a vacation they probably would have never had if it was not for Kiwanis.
A wide variety of other programs are held throughout the state, ranging from the Lewiston Peach Festival to a bocce ball tournament in Massapequa on Long Island; all in support of our charitable endeavors.
We are also very proud of our Service Leadership Programs. These are programs that exist in elementary school, high school, and college. Adult Kiwanis clubs sponsor these programs to help develop our children into good citizens and future community service leaders. Like the adult clubs, our Kiwanis youth and young adult club members perform an enormous amount of service all on their own.
As you can probably start to tell our impact on the lives of children and adults are both deep and wide. So, why you should consider membership?
Two main reasons:
I hope you will consider joining. If you do, I am confident it will be a life-changing experience, as you put others before yourself, as our more than 6,000 members in this state do every day.
Yours in Kiwanis service,
Governor
